Shelter in Place
These stories are studies of home and how we make it, and with whom: over which tables, bars, and grocery shelves; which trees become part of our lives, food, and landscapes; and how we find our way toward our ancestors at the counter, rolling gnocchi.
My vision for Tomato Tomato as a magazine of food writing about culture that champions translation has been taking shape, from the “how to read a menu” features in each issue, that clue us in just a little bit to how language and cultural norms develop over food, to the two pieces of translated fiction in this edition: “Gather Your Wisdom” by María Lujan Martinez (translated by the author) and “You Will Be a Tree” by María Lopez (translated by Curis Bauer). We’ve also got Wil Reidie explaining Finland to us through a short glossary.
I hope you enjoy reading through these stories and spending time in these places, with our authors as your guide. There will be some very exciting news in the Tomato-verse coming soon, with the launch of our blog and a holiday shop collaboration with Central Stem. Thank you for being along for the ride.
